– Crowds are generally smaller than at sunrise if you time it right with shuttle schedules or if you’re staying at the lodge
– Access can be limited—shuttles typically stop running around 7:30 pm, so sunset photos around 10 pm aren’t always possible
– The lighting is beautiful for romantic portraits, and the atmosphere can feel very peaceful when the lake is quieter
In short, sunrise is classic and magical but busy, while sunset can offer a more private, serene experience if timed correctly. Either way, planning around access and shuttle schedules is key to making your Moraine Lake proposal unforgettable.
How to Get to Moraine Lake
One of the most important things to understand when planning a Moraine Lake proposal is access. Private vehicles are not allowed on Moraine Lake Road unless you have a valid handicap placard.
Transportation Options
– Parks Canada Shuttle: Requires advance booking and careful timing. It’s a reliable option, but less flexible—especially for surprise proposals.
– Private shuttle companies: Offer significantly more flexibility and are often ideal for proposals, allowing us to choose exact timing and adjust plans if needed.
– Handicap-access vehicles: Guests with a valid handicap tag are permitted to drive their own vehicle to Moraine Lake.
– Hiking or e-biking in: Some people choose to hike or e-bike the road before it opens for the season. The road is approximately 14 km and uphill most of the way, so it’s a serious effort and not for everyone. Once the road opens to shuttles, I don’t recommend hiking or biking in—the road is narrow and there isn’t much room to safely share it with shuttle traffic.
For surprise proposals, I almost always recommend a private shuttle. It gives us full control over timing, reduces stress, and helps keep the proposal discreet—so you can focus entirely on the moment itself.
Do You Need a Permit for a Moraine Lake Proposal?
Good news—most Moraine Lake proposals don’t require a special permit! As long as you’re keeping it simple—no large setups like tents or elaborate décor, just the two of you and a photographer, and you’re not disrupting other visitors—you’re all set. Parks Canada only requires permits for wedding ceremonies, not proposals.
